right now hurricane sandy is 200 miles off the east coast. sending heavy rain and high winds slamming into coastal areas. here's a live picture from atlantic city, new jersey. the water there off to the left where it's dark. you can see at the camera jumping around because of the winds out there. now, officials have been telling residents, sandy is a life-threatening event and have been urging people to move inland. some things you can't move. sandy swamped boats tied up on docks and is flooding highways and inland areas. forecasters warn sandy could affect 50 million people before she is done. leigh glaser has been tracking hurricane sandy on live doppler 7hd. leigh? >> leigh: very, very serious, dangerous storm system, not only because you have the hurricane coming onshore but an area of low pressure developing to in the north and east, and that's going to sweep in, causing this to become a super storm.

live doppler 7hd, you see the actual -- it's not really a well-defined eye but you can see the counterclockwise spin of the system. the width of this storm, incredible, at over 500 miles there, and as we go ahead and take another look at this system, right now over 200 miles southeast of cape hatteras. still moving to the northeast. by tomorrow night it is going to start to make a jog towards the northeast. possible landfall tomorrow night near atlantic city, spend after that, folks, looks like the other cold storm in the -- canada is going to new jersey with this, -- is going to merge with this, making this a superstorm tuesday. we'll be telling you flights cancelled already. this is really going to impact the eastern half of the united states. >> leigh, residents on the eastern seaboard are already bracing for the storm's impact. millions are being warned to get somewhere safe and to stay put.

reporter: images that speak for themselves. hurricane sandy has that yet made landfall in the u.s. but its fierce winds and rain still are making travel difficult in ocean city, maryland. maryland has already declared a state of emergency. after being briefed by federal officials on the movement of the storm, president obama had this to say -- my main message to everybody involved, we have to take this seriously. my message to the governors and the mayors is, anything they need, we will be there. >> many or heeding the warnings, from north carolina to maine. >> i don't know what to expect at this point. we had irene here, had winds of 80 miles-per-hour sustained, and that was -- >> forecasters fear sandy could u-merge with the cold front, bringing up to a foot of rain in parts. heavy snow could also be

possible in the appalachian mountain region, public transportation in new york and new jersey is ramping down, and officials in new york city announced the evacuation of 375,000 residents in low-lying areas. new york city mayor michael bloomberg had a message for those considering riding out the storms. >> if you don't evacuate you're not just putting ourown life in danger, you're also endangering the lives of the first responder who have to rescue you. >> sandy has been blamed for dozens of deaths in the caribbean. mostly in haiti. >> sandy is stranding hundreds of thousands of travelers. dozens of flights to the east coast from all three bay area airports have been cancelled. the mass roman is live from the airport. reporter: passengerses are usually furious at the airlines when there are this many cancellations or delays but

mother nature is taking the heat. >> it's not the always' fault. so just go with the flow. nairves the same bet. >> hundreds of travelers at sfo who thought they were headed to the east cost were greeted by notices they're flights had been cancelled. this family had their visit to the bay area extended. >> everybody's cancelled so we can't get out until thursday. >> hurricane sandy is headed to the inner not into he is not put out. >> four days here is not the worst in the world, anding in san francisco, instead of going back to poarl, maine, which will be cooler. >> duty manager here says that over over the past few days airlines tried to warn passengers with weekend reservations about potential delays or cancellations. >> social media to alert customers they want to rebook for a different date, they would waive the charges involved with that. so that worked out well.

6,000 flights have been candled nationwide due to sandy and an another 4,000 flights are expected to be cancelled item. >> jetblue cancelled to flights tonight and two tworm. at oakland jetblue cancelled two tonight and four tomorrow. if you're heading back east, contact your airlines before leaving home. >> ama: the american red cross bay area chapter already has volunteers on the ground, on the east coast. the volunteers are helping to coordinate shelter for those in need and assisting in seth up food kitchens and medical tents. we spoke by phone with a richmond resident and red cross volunteer who is feeling the effects of san any delware. >> a half an hour ago the waves are very high and the surf is crashing. it's been raining really hard. and we're still several hours to a day away from when it should be at its worst. >> ama: virginia told us the red

>> ama: a man is under arrest accused of peeping into a child's second floor bedroom this morning on montero drive. police say the 24-year-old man, daniel collier, removed a screen and tried talking to the child. the parents called 9-1-1. police took collier into custody a short distance away and he has been booked, facing peeping and vandalism charges. at least 12 people must find a new place to live after a fire drove them from their homes in san jose. fire broke out around 7:30 this morning in a condo complex on creek side drive. the flames moved quickly after

the fire started in a building that houses several gradges. >> the structure did catch on fire. the fire was from the garage, into the attic of the townhomes, and also spread laterally, damaging more apartments. >> we just banging on the doors and saying, get out! get out ask the ask the there's a fire. and some of them took awhile to respond because they were sleeping. >> ama: nobody was hurt in the fire but the fire destroyed several cars, and gutted the garages as well as three units. two other units were badly damaged. investigators say the fire is not suspicious. the state department of finances has said no to giving the 49ers over $34 million in redevelopment money, and that could affect funding of their new stadium. the decision overturns the settlement of a lawsuit filed by the team against a santa clara county oversight board for redevelopment property tax dollars. in a statement the 489ers said, in part, we're disappointed with the decision by the state department of finances to reject the settlement agreement.

in time for halloween. high pressure broughts the delightful weekend, starting to weaken a little bit. so that's going to allow the high clouds to get through. this cold front bringses us the rain on wednesday. and high clouds increasing tomorrow afternoon. also going to mak for some cooler temperatures throughout the course of monday. i'm going to show you the forecast animation. start this tuesday, 11:00 in the morning and you'll notice that front draped to the north. this is wednesday late afternoon. this is 5:00. wednesday. you can see the rain spreading most of it in the north bay, and then it slides south, will spread across the entire bay area. it's only sunday. we'll update this tonight at 11:00 and also tomorrow. lows tonight, mid-to-upper 40s in the north bay, 50s elsewhere, with the low clouds and fog. highs tomorrow, mid-to-upper 70s inland.
